Social Distance Summer August 8, 2020 by Skyler Simon
Social distancing/quarantining can get pretty boring. Most people feel like they’ve been repeating the same mid-March day for months. How can anybody not get bored out of their minds when being stuck at home all day? How can you deal with the stress of a global pandemic while staying motivated and keeping your life going when the world has stopped? Luckily, there are endless possibilities to continue to live life to the fullest we can and here are just some of them.
If you’re bored out of your mind…
Try exercising! Whether it’s a simple walk or practicing a sport you enjoy you will definitely feel accomplished and either energized or tired enough to take a nap and pass more time!
Even though it’s summer, reading also is a great way to spend time. You have complete freedom to read whatever genre you want! Whether you like classics, advice books, or romance novels- there are so many options out there! Libraries are beginning to open up again, and if you don’t have access to physical ones, e-book libraries like OverDrive are the perfect digital option.
Or if you want to use your brainpower but aren’t much of a reader, you could focus on volunteering and giving back. Whether that be advocating through social media, creating informational graphics, or organizing supply drives, now is a better time than ever to give back.
And if you’re just drained and having a lazier day, watching movies and YouTube never hurt anyone! Think of every show recommendation your friends have given you. Usually, it would be impossible to catch up on all of them, but right now is a better time than ever!
Another suggestion is to really take the time to focus on yourself. Figure out what your values are, who you want to be, what you want to accomplish. Journaling or meditating are great ways to use this stressful time as a chance to reflect on yourself.
Additionally, right now is the perfect time to start a new hobby. Baking or cooking can be fun to try and fun to experiment with, you could try art and find a style to express yourself, or even learn to speak a new language! Finding a hobby you thoroughly enjoy is a great way to let time pass by without the days feeling like eons. Even with this new normal, we can’t expect as human beings to survive without interaction. Texting and calling friends over Zoom or FaceTime is a great way to keep in touch with everyone. Though it might seem like there’s not much to talk about, you can always do things like play online games together (Movie Star Planet is truly entertaining) or even just take Buzzfeed personality tests.
Despite the fact, it feels as though 2020 has been both an incredibly chaotic and incredibly boring year, your social distancing summer can be fun. The key is to enjoy what you have to work on and to enjoy the present moment to the fullest. Remember, you got this even if you feel like quarantine is driving you a little stir-crazy.
