From 711-1492 in Medieval Islamic Spain, all Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side in harmony and peace while making great advancements in architecture, arts, literature, science and philosophy. Hundreds of years before the European Enlightenment and Renaissance, La Convivencia was a period of time where diverse citizenry took seriously the notion of human rights, and social justice to their mutual benefit. The legacy of La Convivencia, ensuring stable communities mutually bound by co-existence in harmony, peace, and understanding…still evades us today.
La Convivencia means: Co-Existence
Take a Pledge:
I pledge to listen to my neighbors, develop mutual respect and trust and pursue friendship based on our shared values. I acknowledge that people of many faith traditions and cultural backgrounds share much in common that can not only serve as a foundation for my personal growth but contribute to the benefit of our shared community. To that end, I will strive to speak out against all forms of prejudice and discrimination in my community. I will commit to learning more about my own faith and its practices, as well as, the faith history and practices of my neighbors while standing up for the protection of religious freedom for all, as protected under the First Amendment of the United States of America.
